Inside The Melbourne Actors Lab, founder Peter Kalos offers a brief glimpse into character methodology, craft, curiosity and disciplined play shaping confident, truthful performers. What unfolds in his teaching goes far beyond technique. It is an approach that treats acting as a rigorous practice of awareness, presence and emotional honesty.

Located in the heart of St Kilda, The Melbourne Actors Lab is a vital and exciting thread in the area’s creative landscape. It sits comfortably among the suburb’s long history of artists, performers and cultural risk-takers. Peter’s work reflects that spirit. His methods encourage actors to engage deeply with character while remaining grounded in themselves, fostering a space where exploration is structured, brave and purposeful.

I attended the Lab to better understand the craft of acting, but what I gained reached far wider than performance alone. The principles taught here changed the way I approach storytelling, collaboration and creative work across disciplines. Lessons around listening, intention, vulnerability and disciplined curiosity now inform how I work behind the camera, how I communicate and how I navigate everyday life. It is rare to encounter a practice so specific in its craft yet so transferable in its impact.

This video is only a small window into that process, but it captures something essential about the work happening inside the studio. If you are curious to see how these ideas translate on screen, check out my short film below.
