A Portrait of My Pa

The below short film brings a still photograph to life as part of a larger personal project exploring memory, history and how stories are carried through generations. Using subtle motion and voice, the piece sits between photography and film. It is an experiment in using contemporary tools to engage with archival material and my own photography without losing the weight or meaning of each moment.

It grew out of a single photograph I took in the late 1990s of my grandfather, William Rudolph van Tongeren. I developed and printed the photo myself and used a Soviet Zenit camera to capture the image, which may have taken its final photograph that day before I tried to repair it but broke it instead.
